Trying to simplify that insignia for the Looker-esque pokemon organization further. Just skething out some ideas in illustrator.

I decided to do a concept sketch for Ba’ as I picture him when I am writing him.

I’ve grown to really like this guy. At first, he’d been troublesome. The ideas for him just didn’t fit well within the confines of the Pokemon universe. He was intended to be a super hero from beyond (hence the mask). But in a world where virtually every pet has super powers, that kind of guy just seems…unnecessary. He’s since been retooled quite a bit.

Ba’ (pronounced like Bat, if the ‘t’ was silent) is still a stranger from ambiguously far away who fights for justice. Now, however, he is a member of a secretive (but apparently government-sanctioned) investigative agency. Ba’ specializes in “extraordinary occurrences.” Because the Master Traveler crew is prone to involvement in just such circumstances, he crosses paths with them often in his work.

My inspiration for Ba’ comes heavily from Pokemon’s The Looker, a character who in turn many suspect to be modeled off the tenth incarnation of a certain time traveling alien with a blue box.

He’s an eccentric, friendly behemoth (roughly 6’ 5”), with a poor grasp of the local language and a thirst for mystery. The others know little about him, either because he is very cryptic or just terrible at speaking. They speculate he wears a mask to hide his eyes. Even more puzzling is his dull skin, which seems to be scaled. Moon Stone also grants him unusual abilities. In the later story, he wears a Moon Ring that he can use to unlock doors, hack electronics, repair/break things, and other stuff he is not yet sure of.

As a secret agent, I thought Ba’ should have a gunslinger quality, so I gave him a duster and boots, as well as a belt that allowed for pokeball quick-draw. Matt’s idea for Ba’s Eye of Horus emblem is in keeping with the theme, though here I swapped it out for the Eye of Providence, which is enigmatic in it’s own right and also I thought it might be simpler to draw. I hoped to make it look a little like a shield, since Ba’ is a protector.

I’ll probably end up redrawing that a few times though.

Haven’t posted any updates about Pokemon: Master Traveler in a while. I wanted you guys to know we are not dead. On the contrary, we are hard at work. There are actually multiple completed pages at this point, but we want to hold off on posting them until we’ve created a significant backlog of pages. We want to be sure that once they go up, we can be consistent with our updates, so we’ve held off on debuting the comic just yet.

It’s coming though. Here’s a preview of just a fraction of a panel of page 2.
